The
Buena Vista County Conservation Board was established
in 1958. The Board consists of five members appointed
by the Board of Supervisors, each for a five year term.
The Conservation Board was established to acquire, develop
and maintain parks and conservation areas, promote and
preserve the general welfare of people, encourage conservation
of natural resources and cultivate good citizenship
by providing adequate programs for public recreation.
The
Buena Vista County Conservation Board meets monthly,
usually the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings are
open to the public and agendas are posted at the Buena
Vista County Courthouse prior to the meeting.
Currently
the Board oversees 16 areas containing over 1100 acres.
The areas include developed park and wildlife areas
where the public can enjoy camping, hiking, picnicking,
boating, fishing, hunting, trapping, bird watching and
other outdoors activities`.
The
Board employs a full-time naturalist whose major commitment
is educating children through programs in the schools.
The naturalist works closely with teachers to enhance
the school curriculum. Programs are also given to scout
groups, retirement homes, civic groups and clubs. Daycamps
and library programs are promoted during the summer.
Contact the naturalist at 712-749-2563 for a list of
